The Utica Food Pantry goes mobile for the first time to help address the needs of “Food Desert” vicinities. A “Food Desert” is an area within the city of Utica where local residents lack access to a neighborhood grocery store, or they do not have the mobility to travel to the Utica Food Pantry. People who qualify for food services, but are not receiving the food, the Utica Food Pantry mobile unit and volunteers will come to them. There is a major crisis for people most in-need who are not receiving the basic food staples that are available to them at no cost.
In efforts to continue to grow this new initiative designed to bring the Utica Food Pantry’s mobile unit to a designated “Food Desert” area, we are reaching out to our giving community for monetary and/or food donations. Right now, for every $1 donated the Food Pantry can provide $6 worth of food to people in need. With the help of our community members, the Utica Food Pantry will be able to continue to provide quality food to families, and the young and older residents living in Utica that suffer from the inability to come into the pantry on their own.
Our first “Food Desert” distribution efforts will take place Friday, July 15th. The Utica Food Pantry’s mobile unit along with dedicated volunteers will be located at 1001 Noyes Street in front of the Upstate Family Health Center from 10am-Noon.
It is the Utica Food Pantry’s plans to continue to address the “Food Desert” areas and provide services throughout the Utica area year-round. No person in the city of Utica should go HUNGRY.

The Pantry serves the residents of the City of Utica who meet The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) income eligibility requirement. Typical clients include working families trying to make ends meet, people experiencing a temporary job loss, individuals whose SNAP (food stamps) benefits have been reduced, and senior citizens. Seniors often seek help because most are on a fixed income and are impacted by higher medication and health care costs.
The Utica Food Pantry was founded in 1982 when it incorporated as a 501(c) organization. As a private, nonprofit organization we depend entirely on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and other strategic partners.
